It really isn't too late to learn...

Updated: Apr 3, 2018

With a growing number of adults learning an instrument later on in life, what's stopping you from joining the club? After all, as an adult you have a completely different mindset and approach now compared with your younger years. Right?

If you were lucky, many might remember having those piano lessons as a child. Most would probably agree that the push and enthusiasm came from the parents. What a wonderful opportunity to learn! And rightly so. But at that age, most would rather spend their time with friends or doing something completely else. I, of course, have been there. The tears have certainly flowed.

But as I approach my 40s with two children in tow, I really do get it. That urge to do something 'just for you'. Something that will relax but still challenge you. You appreciate the music and the skill needed. It's an achievement you recognise and if you master it, you're beyond proud. Most importantly, you want to learn to play the songs you love.

So you have the time and motivation to learn but you question whether it is 'physically' or 'mentally' possible at your ripe old age? This reminds me of one of my very first students I had. His name was Cliff and he was 65+. He was one of the best students I ever had. Despite not having the most steady of hands, his determination was overwhelming. Crotchets would become semibreves, quavers would become minims, but he would get through that piece. I would be on the edge of my seat bursting with pride. Such wonderful memories. I really do miss him.

On a more scientific note, learning the piano as an adult has all sorts of mental benefits. Check out this video for a run down.

So on the whole, learning later on in life definitely has its perks. It improves cognitive skills, aids memory, relieves stress and encourages discipline to name just a few. As an adult, you're more likely to be emotionally attached with 'wanting' to learn rather than 'having' to if you played as a child. It's a great time to start.
