Online lessons are a great way to learn piano. They may sound daunting at first. You may ask: "Can I really learn online?" Absolutely! Or question: "Isn't it just a collection of pre-recorded videos like on YouTube?" Certainly NOT!
The online piano lessons I offer are still private, live lessons that work just as well or perhaps in some ways, even better, than in-person sessions. They offer a convenient, focused and driven means of learning the piano from the comfort of your own home.
"They have also acted as a life-line and moment of opportunity to so many during such a difficult time."
So what equipment do I need?
Thankfully, you don't need to be a computer whiz to get yourself set up for online lessons. Any laptop or tablet with a camera and microphone can be used. Make sure this equipment is updated and has the latest version of Zoom installed. Zoom is the video conferencing platform we use for standard 30 minute, online lessons and can be easily download for free.
Additional equipment which could be used may including headphones for improved sound quality or perhaps an external webcam/microphone that can offer more flexibility. But on the whole, it's probably best to keep things simple!
You may wish to invest in a laptop or tablet stand but many students have used their own creativity in this department. I've seen it all - chairs, ironing boards and an impressive stand constructed using Lego. It's best to set your camera up at a slightly downward, 90 degree angle to yourself and piano, but don't worry, set up is all part of your introductory lesson.
Lastly, ensure you're playing on a good quality digital or acoustic piano. If you have any questions on having your acoustic tuned or would like to upgrade your digital piano, get in touch to discuss further.
How can I connect?
A good, stable internet connection is very important. You can test your internet speed by typing "internet speed test" on Google but ideally, a bandwidth of 1.8Mbps down, 1.8Mbps up should be the minimum requirement. You may also wish to invest in an ethernet cable which greatly enhances the video call by connecting to your wifi directly rather than wirelessly. But if you are relying on a wifi connection, please make sure wifi router is in a good position. The closer to your piano, the better.
Top hidden benefits of online lessons
1. Learn from the comfort of your own home. Your home is a safe haven so choosing to have online lessons will reduce any concerns, particularly if you're new to the piano. Using your own, familiar instrument will also give your confidence a boost too.
2. Online lessons work around your diary more easily. There's no traveling involved, setup is quick and lessons are easier to reschedule to maintain weekly learning. This makes them very appealing to busy adults.
3. Online lessons are highly focused and productive. There's far more brain power required by both the student and teacher when listening, watching demos and reacting to feedback. You'll also need to communicate well, take instruction and tap further into your patience too. Without doubt, online lessons require further concentration which in turn equates to enhanced productivity!
4. Encourages more independent learning. Students need to be more proactive in their note taking and marking - it's much easier to remember when written by your own hand. By regularly marking your own music you'll gain confidence in analysing the music independently. A vital skill in your learning journey.
